Merdeka fishing boat convoy sails into Malaysia Book of records

KEMAMAN: Over 1,000 fishermen from this district travelled more than 50km on 258 boats from Kuala Kertih to Kuala Kemaman in celebration of the 56th Merdeka Day.

The convoy was described as the largest procession of fishing vessels, comprising fibre boats that flew the Jalur Gemilang, stretching for 7km.

Their feat also made it into the Malaysia Book of Records as the largest convoy of boats below 125hp (horse power) in the country, said MBOR chief executive officer Aziz Hamdan yesterday.

“This is, by far, the largest convoy of small-powered boats.

“Although the feat was submitted to us as a new Malaysian record, we made checks and found that such an effort has not been done anywhere around the world. So, this event can be considered as a world record,” he said.
