KUALA LUMPUR: Police will probe the incident where the national flag was disparaged by activist Hishamuddin Rais at the Merdeka eve countdown gathering near Dataran Merdeka, said Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.
“I do not wish to elaborate on the matter at the moment.
“However, we are investigating the incident and will gather the necessary evidence as soon as possible,” he told reporters after attending joint Hari Raya open house celebrations between the armed forces and police at the Royal Museum here yesterday.
Earlier, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu’azam Shah and the Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Hajjah Haminah attended the joint open-house festivities which saw some 10,000 guests attending the gathering.
He was asked to comment on Hishamuddin’s statement at a gathering near Dataran Merdeka on Friday night where the pro-opposition activist was said to have disparaged the national flag.
He was said to have unfurled a Sang Saka Malaysia flag, claiming it to be the true national flag of the country based on traditions of the ancient kingdom of Langkasuka.
He described the Jalur Gemilang as a “false” flag and that Merdeka Day was better known as “disaster day”.
Also present at the event were national laureate Datuk A. Samad Said and controversial student activist Adam Adil Abdul Halim.
A small commotion broke out later as Samad was addressing the crowd when a passer-by grabbed the Sang Saka Malaysia and pointed out that the Jalur Gemilang was the true national flag.
The incident was recorded and uploaded on news portal RakyatNews with several quarters condemning Hishamuddin’s act.
On Sunday, Jaringan Melayu Malaysia’s president Azwanddin Hamzah described Hishamuddin’s act as an insult to the nation’s sovereignty and urged the authorities to take action.
